Agrihoods

Agrihoods are unique communities that combine neighborhood living with agriculture. They are carefully designed to promote a sustainable lifestyle and connect people with the land. In agrihoods, residents are provided with ample opportunities to connect with nature, grow their own food, and participate in sustainable living practices. Agrihood living encourages a deeper understanding of food systems, reduces carbon footprint, and strengthens a sense of community.

One example of an agrihood is The Cannery, which is located in the California college town of Davis. The Cannery includes a working farm with a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program in the landmark barn (shown here) and is set in a walkable neighborhood–complete with a Red Bench.

Biophilic Design

Biophilic design is a philosophy that harmoniously integrates nature and the built environment. This approach recognizes the positive effects that connecting with nature can have on our physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Biophilic design brings people closer to nature by incorporating natural materials such as wood, stone, and plants.

It blurs the lines between indoor and outdoor spaces by using glass to let in natural light (like this gorgeous corner window we designed at Mills Station in Rancho Cordova, CA, by Cresleigh Homes), green walls, roof gardens, and courtyards. By embracing this philosophy, architects and designers can create spaces that look beautiful and contribute to our physical and mental health.

Organic x Mid-Century Modern Style

Mid-Century Modern (MCM) design is making a comeback in architecture with an organic, natural twist. This style blends the natural materials and calming color palettes of the Organic Modern style of the last several years (such as this custom beach house we designed in Sand City, CA) with a focus on creating comfortable, personalized living spaces. It also incorporates playful and whimsical elements of MCM design.

Creating a connection with the outdoors is pivotal to the style, and including a level threshold takes that connection to the next level (pun intended). The color palette is neutral and earthy, with bold colors used sparingly and strategically to focus attention. Light natural wood tones are used for cabinetry, while upholstery fabrics are natural and textured to enhance the organic look.

Accommodate For Aging (and life) with Livable Design™

Home design architecture is changing, focusing on designing adaptable homes that meet the specific needs of the growing senior population. Livable Design™ principles lead this movement, prioritizing safety, comfort, and beauty by introducing zero thresholds, wider hallways, raised outlets, and clear space in kitchens.

Islands with dropped counters (like the island shown here at the Turnleaf community we designed for Anthem in Manteca, CA) allow for the use of standard chairs or wheelchairs. These inclusive design elements set a standard for a more thoughtful, accessible, and comfortable living environment for people of all ages and abilities.

Smart Homes: Technology Integration

Smart homes integrate technology seamlessly into our daily lives, automating temperature control, lighting, security, and entertainment. Energy optimization features, such as smart thermostats and lighting systems, save costs and promote sustainability, while enhanced security features, such as smart locks and motion sensors, offer remote monitoring. Geofencing and voice-activated assistants add convenience, while smart TVs and synchronized lighting enhance entertainment.

The example shown here that we designed for Lennar at Heritage Solaire in Roseville, CA, is WiFi Certified and includes a host of smart features controlled by Amazon Alexa devices. Smart homes combine technology and comfort for an efficient, sustainable, and enjoyable living experience.
